Baker Rachel Rosier won first prize in the professionals category for her creations in the festival’s ‘Big Halifax Bake-Off’ last weekend.
“The lemon sole was actually lemon drizzle cake and tasted amazing,” said competition judge Lee Marshall, owner of Design House Restaurant Halifax.
Amateur baker Lynn Bolton also won an award for her parkin in the ‘Teatime Favourites’ category of the contest and another baker, Nina McArthur, impressed the judges with a giant Rolo cake, in honour of Halifax’s Mackintosh’s Confectionery firm. The judges, who called the cake a “fantastic idea”, commented on its “lovely rich sponge and delicious caramel layers”.
Young bakers also took part in the competition. Fifteen-year-old Husnaa Hussain impressed the judges with a fresh fruit and icing bow cake.
