Welsh cake offers diamond prize

A Welsh start-up bakery business has created a jewel-encrusted cake worth £6,250 in time for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Mary Margaret Mix has teamed up with diamond specialist store Clive Ranger, based in Cardiff, to transform the cake with pure Welsh gold, cubic zirconia and a diamond ring. It will be given away as a prize to one lucky winner on St David’s Day in a raffle in order to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

The Barry-based bakery has used its first dry Welsh cake mix to create the costly concoction, which is due to be available to buy in pouches in the future, and only requires bakers to add their own fat to make the dough.

Richard Slack, managing director of Clive Ranger, said: “We wanted to do something special for St David’s Day and so decided to put our own unique twist on this tasty traditional food. This beautiful solitaire ring is set with a .71 carat certificated diamond and made from pure 18ct Welsh gold taken from the Gwynfynydd Mine in Dolgellau and would make a stunning gift or engagement ring.

“We’ll be displaying the one-off Welsh cake in our window in the week running up to St David’s Day for people to come and take a look at what we believe to be a world-first. We’re confident that the giveaway will be a great success and that we’ll be able to make a significant donation to charity.”
