The Master of the Worshipful Company of Bakers has visited the National Bakery School as it prepares to start work on its redevelopment.
Work on its £2.2m refurbishment is due to begin this summer – however the National Bakery School still needs to find £500,000 worth of funding.
Commenting on the redevelopment, David Bentley, Master of the Worshipful Company of Bakers, said: “The National Bakery School is at the forefront of baking research, technology and training. We are delighted to see that, through the exciting redevelopment the School will continue to provide students with the up to date knowledge and skills needed in the industry.”
Head of the National Bakery School, Dr John Marchant, added: “In order to fully implement the redevelopment plans, the National Bakery School still needs to raise the remaining £500,000 of the total cost of £2.2m. We look forward to working with our close friends in the Worshipful Company and the industry as a whole over the coming months to meet our aims.”
Relationship
The Worshipful Company of Bakers has a longstanding relationship with the National Bakery School. David Bentley’s late father Fred Bentley arrived at the School in 1948, taking up a course in baking and subsequently finishing as top student in his year. Fred went on to become highly successful in the baking industry, was the Master of the Worshipful Company of Bakers in 1987/88 and received the MBE from Her Majesty the Queen for services to the food industry. .
Speaking to students, Bentley said: “When you complete your course at the National Bakery School, you will be on that fantastic road that my father was on. The students who graduate from here enter the industry well prepared and fit for purpose – exactly what employers are looking for.”
The work on the school is set to take place during the summer, to enable the new facilities to open in September 2014, in time for its 120th anniversary.
