Birds of Derby has raised £2,500 for a charity appeal by selling cupcakes.

The East Midlands-based chain swung into action following the death of local BBC presenter Colin Bloomfield.

It sold 10,400 of its sunflower cakes, made with chocolate sponge and vanilla icing, raising the cash for the Colin Bloomfield Melanoma appeal.

Mike Holling, retail director at Birds, said: "We wanted to do something to help Colin’s appeal and this was a great idea for us. The Colin Bloomfield appeal was in the forefront of people’s minds so we thought this would be a nice thing to do."
