High street bakery chain Greggs has topped an online poll of the best eateries to work for.

Jobs website Glassdoor compiles the list through employee ratings, with Greggs achieving a rating of 3.8. It gauges employee satisfaction based on culture and values; work/life balance; senior management; comps and benefits; and career opportunities.

Greggs scored well for its staff discount and wages, comparatively high for the retail sector, as well as an employee profit share scheme.

Poor pay and benefits and inflexibility caused companies to slip down the list.

Other bakery and coffee shop companies to make the top 10 include Starbucks at number five with a rating of 3.3, Whitbread (owner of Costa) in sixth place, also with 3.3, and Pret A Manger in ninth with 3.1.

Pizza Hut and Nando’s took second and third place with ratings of 3.8 and 3.6 respectively.
