Mary Berry is to present a new food-focused BBC One TV series exploring stately homes.

The BBC has commissioned six 30-minute episodes of Mary Berry's Secrets From Britain's Great Houses, which it claims will take her to some of the UK’s best-loved stately homes, although “away from the well-trodden tourist paths”.

News of the show comes six weeks after Berry said she would not be moving with The Great British Bake Off when it goes to Channel 4.

"My decision to stay with the BBC is out of loyalty to them, as they have nurtured me, and the show, that was a unique and brilliant format from day one,” she said at the time. “I am just sad for the audience who may not be ready for change, I hope they understand my decision.”

The new BBC show will explore life upstairs and downstairs, with Mary meeting the present day custodians and their staff as she visits the gardens, kitchens and private rooms.

Inspired by the homes’ culinary histories, Mary will be also be creating her own recipes celebrating the heritage of the houses.

"I am so excited to be doing this new series with the BBC - I have always had an enquiring mind so I know I will be inspired by the great houses we visit,” said Mary.

Tanya Shaw, managing director of production company Shine TV said: “Following the success of Mary Berry’s Easter Feast last year, we are delighted to be working with Mary on this exciting new series.

“I can’t think of anyone more perfect to tell the stories of these great households and to bring us such a unique insight into Britain’s rich culinary past.”
