Former police officer named Cake Artist of the Year

Former police officer Dawn Butler has scooped the Cake Artist of the Year award for her ‘flying’ helicopter cake at the Cake Masters Magazine Cake Awards.

The Cake Masters Awards, which has been run for the past three years, was held at the Birmingham NEC this week.

Butler was chosen as a finalist for the award after creating a levitating helicopter cake with rotating blades for a visit by the Queen and Prince William to the East Anglian Air Ambulance in Cambridge.

“They could have chosen from any cake artist across the globe, it's such a prestigious award in the cake world, and I'm truly honoured to have received it,” Butler told the Nottingham Post.

“It really has made me feel on top of the world. It's a far cry from walking the beat and arresting people.”

After leaving the police force six years ago, Butler set up a business called Dinkydoodle Designs that makes novelty celebration cakes. Initially producing cakes featuring designs such as dragons and guitars, her creations have become more complex over time.
