Former president of the Scottish Association of Master Bakers (now Scottish Bakers) Joe McDonald passed away on 7 November, aged 78.

McDonald was born in Glasgow and joined the bakery trade at the age of 15, spending a total of 63 years in the industry. He started his own business, a bakery van called Joe McDonald Home Baker, in 1963, then went on to open a shop called Dainty Cakes, now called McDonald’s Bakers.

He was highly involved in the Association’s work, serving as president from 2007-08. A Scottish Bakers spokesman said: "During his presidency, he visited bakeries across the country and completed 5,000 miles enjoying the opportunity to learn about the industry and meet its other representatives."
