Food-to-go business Adelie Foods has ceased production at its Middlesbrough plant, putting 180 jobs at risk.
The sandwich maker is proposing to transfer production from its Middlesbrough plant to other factories in the group, and relocate its Midlands distribution centre from Leicester to Tamworth. The decision follows a 12-month operational shake-up across the business.
Adelie will now enter a period of consultation with employees at Middlesbrough and Leicester.
“Over the past 12 months we have grown with existing and new customers and we have invested heavily in our infrastructure, expanding our capability to new products and formats, as well as making our factories and distribution network significantly more efficient,” said Martin Johnson, CEO of Adelie Foods.
“This investment has freed up capacity at our Kilmarnock, Wembley and Southall sites. All of these moves are part of our operational strategy to ensure that we have the right capability in the right parts of the UK to deliver the service and great quality to our customers in the best possible way.”
Adelie makes over three million products a week across 1,000 varieties and stocks nearly 500 third-party products in its warehouses.
