Hummingbird Bakery named Good Egg

London-based Hummingbird Bakery was awarded a Good Egg Award at the Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards, which took place last night (27 September).

The event is run by Compassion in World Farming, a leading international farm animal welfare charity.

The American-style bakery was recognised for its 100% use of free-range eggs – all of the 300,000 its uses in a year. Its product range includes cupcakes, layer cakes, brownies, cheesecakes and muffins.

Tarek Malouf, founder of Hummingbird Bakery, said: “We don’t use preservatives and bake with only the highest-quality ingredients including, of course, free-range eggs. 

“We use free-range eggs because we believe they taste better and because we are passionate about the welfare of the hens. To be recognised for doing so by being presented with a Good Egg Award is a real honour,” he added.

To be eligible for a Good Egg Award, the business must be a well-known or notable company based in Europe, which does not source eggs or egg products from hens in barren battery cages, and which has a current policy or commitment to meet the following criteria in five years: “eggs or egg products to be sourced from hens in ‘enriched cages’ or cage-free” must be written into your sourcing policy.
