Hartís Bakery re-opens following year-long absence

Artisan baker Laura Hart has re-opened her bakery in Bristol, after being forced to relocate.

Hartís Bakery, which was established two years ago on Hampton Lane, has re-opened under the Victorian railway arches in Temple Meads.

The bakery had been absent from the city for a year, after being forced to relocate when the landlord of the existing site needed it back.

Hart said: ďWith my first bakery I rented a kitchen from a restaurant, which was a brilliant way to test the market. After a year, the landlord decided he needed the space himself. At the time I thought it was a great opportunity to move the bakery into a bigger and more permanent premises: I just didnít know it was going to take nearly a year to find the right place.Ē

She added: ďI wanted to show a working bakery in an open space, where customers see the bread being baked before reaching the shop. After seeing another bakery in a railway arch in London, I came straight back to Bristol. Theyíre great spaces and I imagine weíll be here for quite some time.Ē

After closing the bakery on Hampton Lane, Hart held pop-up events, as well as hosting bread-making workshops, which are now a feature of the new Hartís Bakery. The Bread and Breakfast class takes place on Saturday evenings, where a small group of attendees are taught how to make sourdough bread, croissants and a classic chocolate tart.

The bakery specialises in sourdough and slow fermented dough, stocking white, wholemeal and sesame sourdough, spelt, raisin and rosemary, and seeded rye.
