Star Cottage Bakery finds buyer

RDT Foods UK has been named as the buyer for ailing north-east bakery business Star Cottage Bakery.

The firm, which trades as Tindale & Stanton, went into administration on 31 December 2012, with 25 of its 84 staff made redundant at the time.

Joint administrators Mark Phillips, Sonny Cohen and Julie Swan, from PCR, said the transfer of the Burnopfield-based business to RDT Foods was completed on 16 January.

Swan, a licensed insolvency practitioner at PCR, said: “We are extremely pleased that we have secured a buyer for the business and, in so doing, have protected the jobs of the 59 staff that remained in the business following our appointment.”

The bakery, which produces breads, cakes and pastries, will continue to trade as Tindale & Stanton from the company premises at Burnopfield, in County Durham.

Star Cottage, which was formed in early 2012 by four former managers at the bakery, acquired the factory from Bakery Products as a going concern, after it went into administration last summer.

“Following the previous insolvency, the successor business was under-capitalised and, despite the directors’ efforts to turn the business around, they ran out of working capital,” according to PCR.

The bakery had also previously been saved from administration by Bakery Products in 2011.
