Morrisons scoops Blockbuster outlets

Morrisons has bought 49 sites from the administrator of DVD and game rental firm Blockbuster, to be transformed into shops under its convenience store format.

The supermarket firm said the new locations would help it to expand its convenience store business, now known as Morrisons M local, competing with the likes of Sainsbury's Local and Tesco Metro within the same market.

Morrisons said the creation of the new stores, acquired from administrator Deloitte, would be open by late summer and would help to generate 1,000 jobs.

The move comes shortly after Morrisons announced it had acquired seven UK high street sites from camera retailer Jessops, four of which are based in London and the other three situated within England and Scotland.

The company said its existing 12 convenience stores will be rebranded under the Morrisons M local brand.
