Square Pie plans to open 20 outlets by 2017

30 July, 2013

British chain Square Pie will open a fifth outlet at Westfield Stratford shopping centre as the company looks to open a further 20 venues in the next four years.

From Thursday 1 August, the London-based handmade pie business will open at Westfield Stratford’s food court, sharing 1,400 covers with Yo! Sushi, Pho and Tortilla. This will be the third outlet opened by Square Pie in a shopping centre, following Westfield London and Bluewater, Kent. It also operates stalls at Twickenham Stadium and Lord’s Cricket Ground.

The expansion ties in with the development of Square Pie’s menu, evolved from its classic pie and mash. This will include a range of ‘Canapies’ – smaller pies costing £1.50, available as a lighter lunch option.

Martin Dewey, Square Pie founder, said: “We are excited to launch at Westfield Stratford and believe Canapies will prove a real hit. We can wholeheartedly say that the British still love pies, even when temperatures match those in the south of France.”

The new menu will also include a range of lighter meal options such as sweet potato mash, salads and 50% lower-fat ‘Naked’ pies. Hot and cold sides will also be available.

The business recently attained funding through “good business angels”, the Enterprise Investment Scheme and current shareholders. Up to 20 new outlets are currently in discussion for the next four years across various locations.

The first Square Pie outlet opened in Spitalfields Market in November 2001. Last month, the business served over six tonnes of mashed potato and pies at Glastonbury Festival.
