Anfield bakery opens its doors

Homebaked Community Bakery has opened its doors after hitting its crowdfunding target earlier this year.

Raising a total of £18,725 from nearly 500 people, the Homebaked Community Land Trust in Liverpool has re-established a bakery on the site of former family-owned bakery Mitchells, just outside Anfield football stadium.

The money was spent on purchasing a professional four-deck oven for the bakery, which features tables for customers to eat-in, a hatch to serve hot food on football match days, as well as a training kitchen.

Commenting on the launch, Britt Jurgensen, a founding member of the co-operative, said: “The response we had was amazing. We completely sold out, selling about 200 pies, though it could have been more.

“The launch was the pinnacle of three years of hard work,” she added.

The bakery, which officially opened on 26 October, produces ‘Shankly Tribute’ pies containing mushroom and steak, a Scouse pie, pork pies, sausage rolls and traditional white, brown and granary breads. According to Jurgensen, it will also start to slowly introduce sourdough and malted breads.

Two bakers have been employed, as well as an apprentice, a shop floor manager and a business development manager.
