Glasgow bakery reveals ambitious growth plans

Glasgow wholesale bakery D McGhee & Sons has revealed it plans to double turnover and boost its market share this year.
The company, which moved to a £6.8m state-of-the-art bakery at the M8 food park in Glasgow last summer, is already making more than one million rolls a week.Gordon McGhee, MD and grandson of the company’s founder, said that productivity improvements at the new site will help build on its position as Scotland’s third-largestindependent baker – after Aulds and Morton’s Bakery.Mr McGhee said: “We’ve already boosted our turnover to £7.25m this year. Over the next three years, we plan to hit the £11m-plus mark. This new plant can easily handle that, and that was the point of moving here.”Rolls, croissants and potato scones for the morning market, as well as speciality breads and doughnuts now make up the mainstay of the range, with labour-intensive products scaled back. Mr McGhee said: “Our consolidation is now complete and we will be looking at establishing a higher profile for the McGhee’s brand and a larger share of the market in the future.” Founded in 1936, the family-owned McGhee business supplies independent shops and caterers throughout central Scotland. The company employs around 120 workers and plans to take on another 10 this year.McGhee has benefited from planning advice from Scottish Enterprise Glasgow and also a £750,000 Regional Selective Assistance grant.
