Greggs to extend breakfast range amid firm sales growth

Greggs has announced that, following strong sales of its breakfast offering, it will now be extending the range, to include croissants, pain au chocolat and porridge. Its bacon roll is currently its best-selling sandwich line.

The company’s total sales were up by 2.6% for the 39 weeks ended 2 October 2010, the bakery chain said today.

Like-for-like sales in the period increased by 0.5%, while the third quarter alone saw total sales up 2.1%, and like-for-like growth up 0.2%.

Greggs said it is on course to meet its target of 120 shop refurbishments this year, including 30 concept stores. It has so far completed 84 refurbishments, including 17 of the concept stores it trialled in 2009. It has also opened 32 net new shops this year, in-line with its target of 50-60.

The construction of its replacement bakery in Newcastle upon Tyne is progressing well, said the firm. It has now received planning permission for its new cake and confectionery bakery in Penrith and will commence building later this month ready to open in summer 2011.

Greggs has also submitted planning permission for a site in Amesbury, Wiltshire, to unlock store potential in the south west.

“As we expected, the trading environment has been tough and is likely to remain so, with consumer spending continuing to be constrained and inflationary pressures building for next year,” said chief executive Ken McMeikan.

“We anticipate that like-for-like sales in the final quarter will be broadly flat and, therefore, marginally positive over the year as a whole.”
