Bakery consultant Stan Cauvain will be presented with the Eberhard Paech Award in Berlin later this month the first British person to have ever won the prestigious bakery accolade in recognition of his work on the mixing process and numerous technical publications.

The award, which is presented every three years and is backed by the Vereinigung Deutsche BackTechnik (Association of the German Baking Technology), rewards the "extraordinary achievements" of baking industry professionals involved in science, technology, quality development, marketing or education. This year's award has been jointly awarded to Cauvain and Fredy Hiestand of Swiss bakery firm Hiestand, who will share the E10,000 (8,718) prize.

Stan Cauvain is a director of bakery consultancy BakeTran and a leading authority on technical, commercial and scientific matters in baking and milling. From 1994-2004 he was director of the Cereals and Cereal Processing Division at the Campden & Chorleywood Food Research Association (CCFRA). Before that, he worked at the Flour Milling and Baking Research Association (FMBRA) in Chorleywood. He has edited and co-authored nine books and has over 100 technical and scientific publications.

"I see the award as recognition of the contribution others have made in my career. I've been privileged to have worked with some giants of the cereal and milling industry over the years and couldn't have achieved what I have on my own," said Cauvain.
