08 June, 2011

Following a rollercoaster few months for bread prices, the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) figures show that prices are soaring.

The price of bread and cereals shot up 6.9% in the year to April, following a record 2.6% drop the previous month, as seen in the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics.

In February. bread and cereals prices rose by 2.9%, which was the second-highest month-on-month rise since records began in 1986.

The latest figures outstrip overall food inflation, which stands at 4.9% the fastest rise in nearly two years. However, coffee (7.8%), sugar (7.4%), soft drinks (9.8%) and oils and fats (8.7%) all showed higher inflation.
