Bread Source has unveiled a National Loaf Scheme designed to supply loaves to those in self-isolation during the coronavirus outbreak.
The concept is inspired by the Federation of Bakers’ project The National Loaf in 1942. The federation developed a wholemeal loaf as part of the home front effort in the Second World War and to keep the country fed during rationing.
The Bread Source National Loaf is made from 100% stoneground wholemeal flour, sea salt, water and yeast.
Priced at £1, it is designed to be affordable for those facing hardship. Members of the public can also offer to pay for someone less fortunate.
The scheme recently offered 100 free loaves to those who had been made redundant from the hospitality industry due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Bread Source owner Steve Winter owner and his team are baking the loaves in their free time and are looking to partner with other bakeries and suppliers to roll the scheme out across East Anglia and the UK.
The bakery is also trying to ensure the local community continues to have access to real bread and staple foods including milk, butter and eggs, as well as sweet and savoury treats.
A free collection and delivery service is provided in Norwich and Aylsham for those in isolation and at-risk groups, said the company.
“Stay at home, stay safe and let us come to you,” said Winter.
Bread Source’s Norfolk production bakery is also open from 8am-2am on Tuesday to Friday for NHS, social care and front-line workers. NHS and social care staff also receive a 20% discount across all products in-store and online.
