Derbyshire based Bloomers Bakery is changing hands for the first time in 20 years.

The new owners, Richard Nealon and Esplin Chapman, have managed hotels for the past 12 years, and have bought from current owners Marion Wright and Jeff Cooper.

Bloomers Bakery is one of two bakeries in Bakewell who claim to have the original 1860s pudding recipe. The shop sells primarily Bakewell puddings as ‘food souvenirs’, along with breads, meat pies, cheese and deli items.

The shop is located in the centre of town and sells 60-70 lines, with the Bakewell pudding being the number one retail product.

Chapman said: “For me, coming to Bloomers Bakery is like coming home as I grew up less than 10 miles away.

“Richard and I are not planning any radical changes – certainly not to the Pudding recipe. Instead, we are keen to listen and talk to folk before developing delicious bread and scrummy cakes that’ll have everyone coming back for more!”

It is said the Bakewell pudding came about in the 1860s when a kitchen maid at a local inn, instead of mixing the egg and almond mixture into the pastry, spread it on top of the jam and the result became recognised as the Bakewell pudding.
