The Artisan School of Food had a visit from the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, who were given a tour around the facilities, and unveiled a plaque to commemorate their visit this week.

Mouthing off

"Some people thought bread was a bit boring; it's been around for a long time. I wanted to make a bread which is nice to look at as well as nice to taste"

Cake behind closed doors

You may be aware of secret dining clubs, where pop-up restaurants open for one-off banquets and intimate high-cuisine dinners. The same is now happening with cake.

Model behaviour

If further evidence were needed of the fashionable status of cake, so-cutting-edge-it's-obsolete-by-the-time-you-read-it AnOther Magazine will be celebrating its 10th birthday by commissioning 10 of the world's best designers to work with cake makers to create the "ultimate birthday cakes".

Man versus machine

Following last issue's revelation that Disney had patented 'augmented reality' cake projectors to transform your humble celebration cake into a story-telling device, this latest advance in cake boffinery will have you quaking over the future of your craft (and indeed, humankind).

Spring into action

Almost before Santa was back up the chimney this year, the sound of hopping was heard as the Easter bunny came into view. Supermarket Tesco put out Easter ranges on New Year's Day, even though Easter is late this year, on 24 April, almost a month after the earliest date it could fall, 22 March.

Animate your laminates

A huge variety of options to suit every space and budget is available in sheeting and laminating equipment intended for massive factories, giant retail chains, such as Greggs, or even down to smaller craft bakeries.

Revolutionary moments

Is 2011 going to be the year of radical activism? It is when it comes to bread. Students of industrial loaf-making might not torch their bread plants this year, but the arrival of the first major breakthrough in dough processing for many years will at least cause people to sit up and take notice.

Craft brands

A business' brand identity can be an important selling tool. It's what makes you recognisable on the high street and should be what your customers think of when they hear your name. Having said that, you cannot just rely on a pretty logo; your brand identity must work in conjunction with the rest of the business great-tasting products and customer service.
