United Biscuits is planning to invest heavily in its new McVitie's biscuits range Quirks. Launching in mid-July, the products have a smooth chocolatey centre, fully enclosed within a crunchy biscuit, designed to attract new shoppers to the everyday treats segment, said the manufacturer. The range will feature three varieties chocolate, double choc and choc & hazelnut all of which will be packaged in a plastic tray and sold in 175g packs at an MRRP of £1.53. The launch will be supported by a £3m marketing and advertising campaign to include TV, cinema, digital and in-store support.

DayMark's pipers go green

DayMark UK has launched new HighGrip biodegradable piping bags. They break down in 18-24 months, depending on conditions, and are thus kinder to the environment, and landfill. The bags are available in a 20-inch size and come 100 to a bag, five bags to a case. According to the firm, they have all the functionality of standard piping bags, and can be used in all types of bakery, patisserie and catering operations.

Unifine adds shine to buns

Unifine has added a new vegetable-based alternative to egg-based glazes, which can be used on products such as hot cross buns. UniShine is a sterilised, clean-label, ready-to-use gloss, which is created from vegetable proteins. It offers bakers shiny-topped products, and a uniform, non-sticky surface which doesn't cling to silicon paper or baking trays, according to the firm.


Total wheat plantings are up 1% in Great Britain, according to the latest HGCA Planting and Variety Survey. Conducted by the Agriculture & Horticulture Development Board's (AHDB) Market Intelligence team, the 2011 crop survey showed that GB wheat plantings rose from a total area of 1.923m hectares (ha) to 1.941m ha.
