McVitie’s royal cake commemorates Diamond Jubilee

United Biscuits’ (UB) McVitie’s Cake Company has created a royal cake for Her Majesty The Queen to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee.

The 1.05 metre-high cake, which will be on display at Buckingham Palace on 4 June, consists of six sides and five tiers representing different aspects of The Queen’s reign over the past 60 years. It includes 50kg of dried fruit soaked in three litres of whisky and brandy, and took 20 people to craft over five months.

It is the 15th royal cake the firm has produced across more than 100 years.

Kevin McGurk, operational services director at UB, said: "We are delighted to show our appreciation for Her Majesty’s long reign over the country by providing this cake, which highlights the important role HM plays in the Commonwealth and across the UK.”

The base of the cake features 54 flags of the Commonwealth nations and a replica of the Imperial Crown has been created for the top, which took 200 hours and four weeks to construct from solid icing, decorated with edible gems and pearls.

A quote from The Queen’s coronation speech about HM’s role in the Commonwealth has been reproduced on the second tier, reading: “Of societies old and new; of lands and races different in history and origins, but all, by God’s Will, united in spirit and in aim.”

The next tier features the residences of The Queen: Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, Balmoral Castle, Sandringham and Holyrood, together with a panel stating ’60 glorious years’ and regal miniatures of a lion, ‘ER’ and a crown.

The third layer’s coronation theme include the Royal Coat of Arms for The Queen and a representation of the windows of Westminster Abbey where the coronation ceremony took place. The ‘Order of the Garter’ with the four national symbols in each corner has been placed on the fourth tier, as well as ‘ER’ in gold.

UB’s McVitie’s brand made its first royal cake in 1893 for the marriage of King George V to the Queen. The firm also created a four-tier wedding cake for The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh in 1947, as well as the official 60th wedding anniversary cake in 2007.

The most recent cake made by McVitie’s was the groom’s chocolate biscuit cake, made for the wedding of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge last year.
