Les McKeown from the Bay City Rollers purchased pies from current World Scotch Pie Champion, JB Christie, to mark the launch of this year’s Championships.

The competition is supported by Scottish Bakers and the Scottish Federation of Meat Traders. Both trade associations actively support and promote bakers and butchers in Scotland by encouraging and sharing best practice.

Run for the last 15 years, the competition aims to highlight that bakers and butchers create high-quality artisan pastry products.

McKeown said: “We love a great pie and always stock up when we are on home ground. Touring non-stop around the world means we need to keep our strength up, so it’s been great today to stock up on the best pie in the land and it really lives up to its reputation as a champ.”

Alan Clarke, chief executive of Scottish Bakers, said he was “delighted” with the support from the Bay City Rollers. “They are an iconic Scottish Band and the Scotch Pie is an iconic Scottish product,” he said. “We are delighted to announce that the band will join our group of professional judges this year to select the best pies in the land.”

In addition to crowning The World Scotch Pie Champion, the judges will sample a full range of savoury products, including bridies, sausage rolls and a wide range of pies. The judges will also taste “the best apple pie” in a new category.

Entry forms are due in by 1 November and products should be delivered to Carnegie Conference Centre, Halbeath Road, Dunfermline, KY11 8DY between 9.00am and 11.30am on Wednesday 13 November.

The winner of the Scotch Pie category will be declared World Champion.
