Cinnamon Square has won the speciality category at the World Bread Awards for its Ricky Sticky bun.

Held on 8 October, the awards ceremony, sponsored by Tiptree and in association with Food Network UK, saw the bakery win the award for its sweet bun, launched on 11 May this year.

Rolled in cinnamon and topped with a caramelised pecan topping, the bun celebrates the beginning of the town’s annual Ricky Week.

Paul Barker, Cinnamon Square’s co-founder and master baker, said: “Cinnamon Square is already renowned as the home of the Cinnamon Square bun and people travel from afar to purchase them, so we thought it would be brilliant to create a product that would be synonymous with our fantastic town. Little did we know that it would go on the win such a prestigious award within such a short period.”

Describing the product as “awesome”, the judging panel included James Morton, former Great British Bake Off finalist; Xanthe Clay, food writer for The Daily Telegraph; Andrew Whitley, founder of the Village Bakery and the Real Bread Campaign; Edd Kimber, The Boy Who Bakes; Phil Vickery, TV chef, and Charles Campion writer and broadcaster of Masterchef

Barker added that he was “proud to live and work in Rickmansworth”, and that he hoped the bun would attract more visitors to the high street.

The bakery’s cottage loaf won a silver award in the Great British White category.
