WCB bursary applications open

The Worshipful Company of Bakers has started receiving applications from bakers hoping to win a place on an all-expenses-paid trip to the prestigious Richemont School in Switzerland.

Chosen applicants will attend a two-day course taught in English on Confectionery and Speciality Bakery Breads, Christopher Freeman, from the Worshipful Company and director of Dunn’s Bakery in London said.

The Worshipful Company organises an annual educational trip to promote skills within the industry and promote the craft of baking, he explained.  

This year’s course will take place at the Richemont School in Lucerne on October 4 and 5, followed by a tour of the bakeries, patisseries and cafés in Lucerne on 6 October.

The Worshipful Company has ten places to offer bakers in full time training with relevant baking experience.

It is also offering the Piero Scacco Award, funded by Piero Scacco of Montana Bakery, with places for two younger individuals who are starting to make their mark on the industry.

And the livery company is taking applications for the ABIM Award, from the Association of Bakery Ingredient Manufacturers, which is for one more mature person. The Joseph Travelling Award is also on offer for one mature applicant, looking to further his or her bakery skills.

Recipients of the Awards will depart for Switzerland from London on 3 October and return on 7 October 2015.

Closing date for applications is 8 May 2015, with interviews taking place on May 15 at Bakers’ Hall, London or at the relevant colleges.
