Sandwich supplier Cranks has introduced the winning sandwich from a student competition into universities nationwide.

The Tzat’s Tasty, created by Gemma Carey, winner of the Cranks Great British Student Sandwich Challenge, comprises rocket salad, sunblushed tomatoes, olives, cheese, and is topped with tzatziki.

More than 100 students from 10 universities submitted designs, alongside a full marketing plan, a breakdown of focus group feedback, market theory behind flavour combinations and a promotional strategy.

Phil Lynas, managing director at Cranks parent company All About Food, said: “This is the first time we’ve run a competition of this nature with Cranks and we were very impressed with the calibre of entries. Gemma developed a product that is not only in line with the current portfolio and offered a splash of the Cranks humour, but she was also integral to the whole development process.”

Carey added: “Not only have I gained invaluable first-hand experience of turning an idea into a product, but most importantly, I have seen my product on-shelf. How many students can go into the job market with that on their CV?”

Cranks sell vegetarian sandwiches, wraps and salads in universities across Britain.
