Statistics reveal that of the top 10 grocery search terms, eight of them are bakery-related.

Chocolate cake topped the list, being the most searched for grocery term from all devices. Banana bread took bronze position in third place.

Grocery search volumes have grown by 22% compared to the same quarter last year, according to the report by the British Retail Consortium.

Helen Dickinson, director general, British Retail Consortium, said: “In a change that will give particular cheer to grocery retailers, the latest BRC-Google numbers show that customers are increasingly turning to their tablet computers and smartphones for culinary guidance.  With recipes dominating the top 10 search terms, and a personal favourite, chocolate cake recipes, topping it, this presents a great opportunity for retailers

Particular spikes in grocery search terms were seen around Bank Holiday weekends and national events like the world cup.

Growth of grocery search volumes on smartphone devices was also strongest in June, up 85% compared with 23% growth on tablets and a 22% growth across all devices.

Consumers searching for groceries on smartphones grew most rapidly in Greater London, 152% up on a year ago, however the South West experienced the largest growth across all devices and tablets for grocery searches.
