United Biscuits (UB) has confirmed it could cut up to 157 jobs at its McVitie’s plant in Manchester.

This is the equivalent of one third of the current work force based at the Stockport factory.

The McVitie’s manufacturer said it wants to create "modern, efficient and competitive operations at the site".

It continued in a statement: “United Biscuits announced in early June proposals to restructure our manufacturing operations at our Manchester site.

“Discussions have been held with employees and union representatives, regarding the potential impact to roles at the site and we are still in consultation.

“The proposed restructure will result in the potential loss of up to 157 roles from a total workforce of around 630 employees. These proposals are not put forward lightly and wherever possible we will look to minimise the impact of the proposed restructure for employees.”

The company faced workers action in March, when unrest about job cuts, shift pattern changes and potential wage cuts took place at McVitie’s Cake Company factory in Halifax.

Meanwhile, speculation surrounds which companies are considering the £2m bid to buy United Biscuits.

Burtons Biscuit’s Company and Kellogg are reportedly part of the hoard of businesses which may make a bid.
