Real Bread Week will kick off this May (9-15) to celebrate independent bakeries which bake ‘real bread’.

The week-long event, run by the Real Bread Campaign, encourages bakers, millers and home bakers to get involved with the week and promote bakeries.

Ideas to promote the week include running baking workshops, holding tasting dinners and hosting a baking club.

Chris Young, coordinator of the Real Bread Campaign, said: “The week is the opportunity for real bread bakers to do something extra special, something a bit different, to underline and remind everyone of just how fantastic, important and worth supporting they are.

"We’d like to see as many small, independent bakers going the extra mile to show off what they do best – crafting delicious, additive-free loaves – with events and activities that reinforce their rightful place at the hearts of their local communities.”

The campaign has also teamed up with Balcony Shirts, which will be producing limited-edition T-shirt and apron designs with bread-related puns on, reading ‘Flour Arranger’ and ‘Dough Nut’.  Part of the proceeds from each sale will go to the Real Bread Campaign, part of the food and farming charity Sustain.

The t-shirts can be seen below and are on sale at balconyshirts.co.uk.

Supporters of the campaign include Richard Bertinet of The Bertinet Kitchen and Tom Herbert of Hobbs House Bakery.
