Fudge firm triples production capacity

Cornish fudge company, The Buttermilk Confectionery Co, has completed its move to a new £600k site, tripling production space.

It will now concentrate on listing its products with more retailers and gaining its BRC Global Standards accreditation.

The family-run business bought the 1.75-acre site in Bodmin, North Cornwall, in June last year. It has since spent a further £250k on renovations and machinery, and can produce an extra 300kg of fudge a day.

This is the company’s largest investment to date, and has resulted in the recruitment of another six employees to the company.

David Goad, joint owner of the business, said: “We have a product that we’re very proud of and our next step is to get our confectionery listed in a greater range of retailers, for which we need BRC Global Standards accreditation. Our previous factory in Wadebridge wasn’t equipped for this, but now we are able to achieve it as well as meet large demands.

“We’ve spent around £100,000 on new machinery which drastically improves our efficiency. We’re easily able to produce 1,500kg of fudge each day, compared with 1,200kg previously.”

Buttermilk produces more than 70 different flavours of fudge and a range of confectionery, including brittle, toffee, truffles and Turkish delight
