The Lakeland Bake bakery in Carlisle has been destroyed in a fire, with the cause as yet unconfirmed.

Lakeland Bake was housed in a single-storey building on Kingsmoor Park in the north of the city and caught fire on Saturday afternoon, according to local newspaper the News & Star. Reports suggest that little of the 20m x 40m factory, which made crumpets and pancakes for the retail industry, remains.

Fire services were dispatched from Carlisle, Wigton, Brampton and Penrith to fight the blaze and evacuated workers watched. Nobody was hurt in the incident.

Ian Seel, of Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service, told the News & Star: “We’re still trying to confirm the cause of the fire but it looks likely to have been caused accidentally by the process machinery within the unit. However, we are continuing with investigations.”

Lakeland Bake was established in 2005. Its directors are Andy Turner, Peter Turner and Nigel McKerr. Losses have not yet been ascertained.
