Bakery ingredients supplier EDME is investing over £2m into its manufacturing facilities in Essex.

Managing director Peter Tichbon told FoodManufacture.co.uk that the investment should boost turnover by modernising and diversifying its operations.

According to Tichbon, the bulk of the investment this year will be on a brand new mixing plant, which should be up and running in November.

Simon Wooster, technical director for EDME, said: “It gives us more scope with mixes, which means we can use liquid inclusions in our dry blends. This means we can get ingredients like honey and malt extracts into ingredients.

“It also means the process will be more cost-effective, easier to run and faster, so we can produce more.”

Wooster also said the company had been doing a lot of work with its gluten-free output, and had been doing some development work with new alternative flours such as chia flour.

The new high-speed mixing plant is set to handle 90% of the Mistley, Essex, site’s mix volume, which is about 10,000t per annum, Tichbon added.

The company opened a £600,000 gluten-free mill in January this year to supply the growing market.
