Sandwiches account for a 20.2% share of the total food-to-go category worth £4.4bn, according to new data from the British Sandwich Association (BSA).

During British Sandwich Week (10-16 May 2015), Jim Winship, director of the BSA, announced that, in the past year, sandwich sales amounted to £7.8bn, which is up 4.3% on the previous year and equates to 3.5bn sandwiches being sold.

Regular sandwiches are still the favourite, commanding a 56.9% share of the category, and backing British Baker’s #WeLoveBread campaign – the movement designed by us and supported by the industry to turn around the bad perception of bread. Get involved by tweeting using #welovebread and tell us why it is great.

Filled rolls or baps are the next favourite (23.4%), then baguettes (9.7%), wraps (5.6%) and paninis (2.4%). Chicken remains the most popular sandwich filling 34.8% share this year, followed by ham (10.5%), cheese (7.7%) and egg (5.8%).
