Bakers have been batting their best Wimbledon-inspired cakes on social media, as the two-week championships begin this week.

The annual tournament, synonymous with British summertime and strawberries and cream, has prompted dozens of bakers to create Wimbledon-themed cakes to capitalise on the event.

Tamsin Aston of Definitelycake.com, based in Potters Bar, has created a collection of Wimbledon cake pops, and says she gets involved in the tennis each year.

She said: “They’re really popular and everyone loves them. I’ve done strawberries and cream, and the Pimms cake pops can be made with actual Pimms sponge.

“Cake pops are great because you can make them different shapes, decorate them, plus they’re individual portions.”

Campbells bakery, based in Crieff, Scotland, has also got involved by making its own Wimbledon inspired Wimblenut - a tennis ball style doughnut filled with lemon curd.

Gails Artisan Bakery has also lined up for a slice of the excitement, opening a new store in Wimbledon, which it will refurbish again after the tournament.

The Wimbledon tournament runs until Sunday 12 July, and started a week later this year to give players time to recover from the French Open.
