Greggs-lovers in South Shields, Tyne and Wear, received a blow when the high-street bakery retailer closed its Fowler Street branch on 24 October.

As reported in the Shields Gazette, the closure is the town’s second in two years, with a Kings Street branch closing in June 2014. This new closure brings the total number of South Shields town-centre Greggs stores down to two.

A Greggs spokesman told the Gazette: “We can confirm that the shop on Fowler Street has closed and will not be re-opening. All staff are being re-deployed to Greggs shops nearby.”

The move may come as a surprise to some as the company recently posted healthy Q3 like-for-like sales growth figures of 4.9%.
