Cake and desserts manufacturer Ministry of Cake has relaunched its factory shop after a £60,000 investment.

Ministry of Cake supplies frozen goods to the foodservice and catering industries across the UK and Europe. The factory shop sells “seconds”, or goods unable to be sold by the main business, either due to exceeding a quota or minor faults such as burnt edges.

The shop was launched on 11 November at the factory site in Taunton, Somerset, with just under 100 people attending, including Rebecca Pow, MP for Taunton Deane.

Originally operating out of an adapted room at the back of the factory, the new, larger factory shop is designed to take advantage of the outlet’s growing popularity, which currently produces a turnover of around £200,000 a year.

Managing director Chris Ormrod said: “We’ve just brought our shop into the 20th century - to put it where it should be.

“It’s kind of a mobile building, which we got like a Meccano kit.”

He added: “The shop is not a profit-making exercise. It is designed to avoid loss.”

The shop refit is part is a wider rebranding project for Ministry of Cake, which will launch a new website within the next six weeks.
