Craft business Village Bakery has sponsored Wales’ oldest half marathon for the 21st time.
The bakery traditionally awards all the runners bara brith loaves instead of medals, but this year it gave out sourdough crumpets and Welsh cakes.
The race was founded by triathlete and ironman Peter Norman, who was working as a maintenance engineer at Village Bakery at the time. The bakery has always sponsored the event, and it is run by Cute Fruit Events on behalf of Wrexham Athletics Club.
Wrexham Half Marathon saw 816 runners cross the start line on 14 February this year.
The fastest man was Joe Bailey from Salford Harriers and Athletics Club with a time of one hour, eight minutes and 24 seconds. The fastest woman was Hannah Jarvis from Dorking and Mole Valley Athletics Club with a time of one hour, 20 minutes and 33 seconds.
Being a part of it
Village Bakery product development assistant Florence Roberts ran the course too, coming in 289th, with a time of one hour, 38 minutes and eight seconds.
Robin Jones, managing director of the Village Bakery, said: “It’s fantastic to still be part of it after all these years. We make a claim to being the local baker, and supporting events like this underlines that – we bake local and we support local.”
Elsewhere, Village Bakery is currently seeking planning permission to build a new £16m plant.
