£1.5m investment for Northumberland ingredients supplier

Silvery Tweed Cereals will boost its capacity, improve productivity and create jobs.

The investment has enabled the company to create eight new full-time roles, commission new machinery and automate a number of processes. The six-month investment project, which was partly funded through the Regional Growth Fund, included the installation of a new automated packing line and robot palletising system.

The company, based in Berwick-upon-Tweed, processes raw grains (most of which come from within a 40-mile radius in the Scottish Borders) into cereal ingredients at its 40,000 sq ft factory. It also cleans and blends seeds, for supply into bakery and cereal products.

Managing director Bob Gladstone said: “Our latest investment programme will make a real difference to the way we operate and we’re really pleased to have been able to create permanent new jobs in the process.

“Our cereal and bakery ingredients are supplied into many of the UK’s top food and drink brands, as well as own-label products of the major retailers, so we must stay at the top of our game when it comes to the efficiency and safety of our processes.”

Silvery Tweed Cereals is family owned and managed, and has been in business for 172 years. Last November, Peter Thompson joined Silvery Tweed Cereals as operations director.
