BakeArt manufactures first sugar sprinkles in the UK

BakeArt has become the first company to manufacture sugar sprinkles in the UK, at its plant in Ashington, Northumberland.

Dyed with natural colourings, the sprinkles are available to bakers in 25 shapes including hearts, shoes, stars and ducks. The company is also offering a bespoke service, to tailor the shapes to bakers’ needs.

Tony Wadley, managing director of BakeArt, said manufacturing in the UK meant bakers could order smaller quantities than the minimum orders required by foreign companies to deliver to the UK. This reduces waste and cost as the colours of the stock have less time to fade in storage.

Wadley said: “At the moment there is no one manufacturing in the UK and we’ve spent three years developing these. They allow customers to buy fresher stock and therefore allow brighter colour intensity.”

The sprinkles are currently being marketed to professional bakers and, while Wadley did not rule out selling to home bakers in the future, he said it was not a current priority.

He said: “It’s definitely something we’re looking at but we haven’t even begun to tap into the plant bakers, so we want to concentrate on that for now.”

BakeArt produces a variety of cake decorations and aims to become the leading manufacturer in the UK. In addition to sprinkles, the company also produces printed sugar paste decorations and printed wafers.
