Ginger Nut production restarted

United Biscuits (UB) has resumed production of McVitie’s Ginger Nuts at its Carlisle factory.

Storm Desmond brought production to a halt last December, resulting in a national shortage of many of the company’s most popular products, including Carr’s Water Biscuits and Ginger Nuts. Previously, only the McVitie’s Gold bar had re-entered production.

UB said it expected the new stock to be available from around 11-12 March, with Asda, Tesco, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s all expecting deliveries. Other biscuits are expected to re-enter production over the next few weeks, with Water Biscuits due to be the last into production, due to the special brick ovens required to make them.

Mike Heaney, factory general manager at United Biscuits, said: "The floods in Northern England caused considerable damage to our factory in Carlisle and we were forced to halt production at the site. Huge thanks to our United Biscuits team for their hard work and efforts, normal service is nearly underway and our biscuits should start appearing back on shelves from the middle of March, but please bear with us as we regain momentum.

"We apologise to customers who have experienced any inconvenience, and appreciate all the support we have received."

UB owns the McVitie’s, Jacobs and Go Ahead brands and recently announced a wide range of launches across its brands for 2016.
