The Doughnut Project, in the US, has unveiled a sweet and savoury pastry hybrid topped with cream cheese, sesame seeds and garlic.

The Manhattan-based bakery has a reputation for experimental doughnuts – past creations include Bacon Maple Bar and Olive Oil & Black Pepper.

The Everything Doughnut is a sweet doughnut pastry, and – taking its inspiration from the ‘everything bagel’ – is topped with a sweet, cream cheese glaze, and sprinkled with sesame seeds, poppy seeds, garlic, sea salt, and pepitas (or pumpkin seeds).

Everything bagels are usually covered in most of the flavours a bagel shop has to offer: garlic, onion, sesame seeds, poppy seeds, and salt (though much debate has been had about exactly which ingredients belong on top).

Troy Neal, who owns The Doughnut Project with Leslie Polizzotto, said: “We enjoy the salt and the sweet, so a lot of our flavours have a nice balance.”

The Everything Doughnut has been a big hit on Instagram, where local foodies have been posting photos non-stop since its launch.
