Gallery: the best sandwiches in the world

These are the best sandwiches in the world.

Our gallery shows the 10 finalists of the 11th Delifrance Sandwich World Cup which took place in Paris this week.

The top accolade was scooped by Ivalo Acurio of Peru – who wowed a panel of international judges, including British Baker, three star Michelin chef Arnaud Donckele and former World Bread Championship winner, and master baker, Sylvain Herviaux.

The British entry in the competition was from 18-year-old University College Birmingham (UCB) student Nathan Lane. He created ‘An English Country Garden, which boasted locally sourced pigeon, beetroot and pear and was served on a Delifrance Heritage Poolish Loaf.

Although, he did not make the top three, Lane said: “I enjoy a challenge and the Delifrance Sandwich World Cup gave me the opportunity to express modern gastronomy in a British Sandwich.”

Ian Dobie, Delifrance’s UK managing director, added: “Delifrance UK picked Nathan and his recipe to represent the nation after sampling his selection of on trend ingredients and bold flavour combinations.”

Delifrance has been running the Sandwich World Cup since 1999 and the UK has won the title in 2005 and 2009.
