Tunnock’s plans multi-million pound extension

Biscuit company Tunnock’s has submitted plans for a multi-million-pound extension to its Lanarkshire factory in Uddingston.

The aim is to accommodate new production equipment and increase production of its existing product ranges.

According to Scottish Construction Now, South Lanarkshire Council has received a submission from the firm for a 1,900sq m extension on three storeys, which will also allow the company to add 30 jobs to its current workforce of over 500 employees.

Tunnock’s told the construction journal: “This proposal will future-proof the present factory to accommodate increased worldwide demand for Tunnock’s products.

“The effect of the proposed extension is to allow new and improved equipment to be installed.

“This additional investment of several million pounds into the existing bakery premises will additionally safeguard current employment on the site.”

British Baker contacted Tunnock’s, but was told the company had no comment on the proposal.

In April, the company saw sales of its tea cakes soar following a boycott by hardline Scottish nationalists
