David Smart encourages children to bake

David Smart, director at Greenhalgh’s Craft Bakery, appeared on ITV’s Good Morning Britain yesterday to encourage children to get involved in baking.

Smart showed presenters Eamon Holmes and Ruth Langsford how to make a tear-and-share garlic-and-rosemary focaccia bread, and meat-feast with spicy salami & chilli. He presented them as a great way for both bread lovers  to use leftover ingredients and store-cupboard staples.

David Smart told British Baker: "Baking is quite involved and obviously the Great British Bake Off is back on again. It's a bit of fun and it's getting craft baking in the general public and to show how easy it is to make the dough."

The craft baker’s advice on using leftover ingredients complements his condemnation of retailers for the “terrible” overproduction of bread. People who are less fortunate could benefit from the surplus, he said.
