Sainsbury’s extends delivery trial

Sainsbury’s has spread the reach of its one-hour delivery service to 35,000 postcodes across London.

The supermarket’s app, Chop Chop, was trialled in Wandsworth and Pimlico stores, allowing users to order up to 20 items to be delivered by bicycle within 60 minutes, for a fee of £4.99.

The service is part of the retailer’s strategy to give its customers more options when shopping with the supermarket.

Jon Rudoe, Sainsbury’s director of digital and technology, said: “In Wandsworth, customers are using the new one-hour delivery service to buy forgotten items, or emergency goods when they cannot leave their home, or have invited guests on the spur of the moment.

“It complements our same-day delivery service, which is available at selected London postcodes through our online groceries service.”

To support the new delivery service, the retailer has recruited an extra 40 staff members in the Pimlico and Wandsworth stores, with new pickers shopping for a customer’s items and a new team of cyclists delivering goods within selected postcodes.

Earlier this month, Sainsbury’s unveiled an overhaul of its patisserie counters as it looked to tap into the success of The Great British Bake Off.
