Tesco trial digital receipts

Tesco has introduced a trial of a contactless system that sends a proof of purchase to customers’ smartphones.

Shoppers at Tesco stores in Harlow, Essex, will be given a sticker to tap on a special terminal at the till, which produces a receipt with a barcode they can use to link to an app on their phone. They can then tap the sticker on the terminal to receive a digital receipt every time they shop. Using the app will ensure no email addresses are involved and that information remains anonymous.

A Tesco spokesperson told British Baker: “We’re always looking for ways to make the shopping trip a little bit easier for customers. We’re currently trialling a digital receipt service in one of our stores, which will allow customers to keep a record of all their receipts in one place.”

Tesco has moved towards the digital market for shoppers after announcing in August that it was set to launch a mobile payment service nationally by the end of the year.

The retailer believes the system will make it easier for shoppers to keep a record of their purchases and will be environmentally friendly.

Tesco is believed to be the first retailer to trial this new system, according to Neil McGeough, technical programme manager at Tesco, and it hopes that shoppers in Harlow will react positively to the trial, so that it can extend the experiment across the nation. The trial will end in November.
