Grilled cheese street food operator The Cheese Truck has smashed its crowdfunding target of £100k after an investment of more than £50k in less than 24 hours.

The business has operated from two converted 1970s ice cream vans for the past two years and has jumped from £47k to 110k overnight via Crowdcube, with 23 days left on its funding programme.

The company has already secured its site in Deptford, which is due to open in three weeks, but needed financial support through crowdfunding for equipment and supply at its second site in Camden.

Speaking to British Baker just prior to achieving the goal, owner Matthew Carver said reaching the £100k target would be a dream come true.

“We’ve had a lot of interest over the last couple of days and then yesterday we had two or three £10k investments that came in just after lunch [yesterday],” Carver told British Baker.

“It would be amazing. It would be a dream come true if we reached our £100k target. It has been a worrying couple of months trying to work out whether we would hit the target. And then to hit it in the first week would be incredible and it would allow us to progress as a business.”

Owner Matthew Carver came up with the idea of his business after returning from the United States. He then toured music festivals in the UK in his van before becoming renowned for his grilled cheese sandwiches.

The Cheese Truck owner does have plans to open up more sites, but insists he is in no rush.

The company has now set a new overfunding target of £130k.
