Judging for The World Championship Scotch Pie Awards 2017 is now complete, with bakers waiting anxiously for the results in January.

Fifty industry experts alongside Donald Wilson, Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh, scrutinised around 500 pies from more than 100 butchers and bakers on 9 November in Dunfermline, assessing appearance, quality, consistency and taste.

Now in its 18th year, the competition welcomed its first international entry in the form of Kevin Haggard, owner of Sunblest Foods in Santa Maria, California, who travelled to Dunfermline to put his pies against the best Scotland has to offer.

The Lord Provost said of the day: "The Scottish food and drink sector is hugely important to our economy, but it’s also hugely important to our national pride and today made me incredibly proud of the artisan baking that goes on in this land.”

As announced at the launch, this year saw the introduction of celebrity judges in the football pie category. Former Celtic player Simon Donnelly and Partick Thistle manager and SPFL Board Member Ian Maxwell came together with professional judges to pick the best pies and savouries sold at a football match in Scotland.

The winner will be announced at a lunch on 11 January 2017 at the Westerwood Hotel, Cumbernauld
